YouTube controls explained
"Don't recommend channel" is not the same as blocking a creator
YouTube describes "Don't recommend channel" as feedback that may tune recommendations. ChannelFence maintains a creator list and hides matches across supported YouTube surfaces.
What "Don't recommend channel" does
YouTube's official help documentation groups "Don't recommend channel" with recommendation controls such as "Not interested." It says this feedback may be used to tune your recommendations and exposes the option on certain pages, including Home and Watch Next.
That makes it useful when you want to influence what YouTube recommends. YouTube also lets you clear this recommendation feedback through Google My Activity.
What a ChannelFence block does
ChannelFence creates an explicit block-list entry for the selected creator. While the extension is enabled, it hides matching content across supported Home feeds, search results, Watch Next recommendations, Shorts, playlists, comments, and direct visits.
You can inspect the list, remove individual creators, pause filtering without deleting the list, and import or export a backup.
| Behavior | YouTube "Don't recommend channel" | ChannelFence block |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Tune recommendations | Hide a selected creator across supported surfaces |
| Visible editable list | No visible per-channel list; feedback can be cleared in Google My Activity | Yes, inside ChannelFence |
| Search results | Not presented by YouTube as a site-wide exclusion | Supported creator matches are hidden |
| Local backup | No ChannelFence-style block-list export | Import and export supported |
Use YouTube's control when you want to give its recommendation system feedback. Use ChannelFence when you want a creator on an explicit, persistent list. ChannelFence does not claim to retrain or replace YouTube's recommendation system.
Want an explicit creator block list?
ChannelFence is free, open source, and stores the list locally in Chrome.
